Twenty-Five

MALLINI

I’ve only been in the atrium a handful of times and always by necessity, not choice. There’s a claustrophobic air to the room, even though a door to another world can be opened here as well as portals from other parts of the keep and demon realm.

This room is saturated with allure, and it’s suffocating.

My boots scuff marble as I pace. I hate waiting.

What if Odette has already administered the potion to Tristeene? What if something goes wrong and I’m not there? She shouldn’t be alone.

Dammit. “How long before they open a door?”

“Soon,” Erinea says. “I spoke to Ramiel, and he says the order has been sent.”

“We need access to this hub. We’re Satan blood and Satan’s council.”

“The council was never given access,” Erinea says.

“But you know where it is?”

“I do.”

There’s no pride or smugness in her tone. So unlike the woman I’ve grown up to know.

I stop pacing and lean back against the table. “Where is it?”

Shadows shift in her eyes. “I can’t tell you that. I’ve betrayed Morningstar enough already. But…I agree that the Satan spawn should know, and I’ve already petitioned the princes on the matter.”

Color me surprised. Could she have changed this much in such a short space of time?

“Please don’t look at me like that,” she says.

“Like what?”

“Like I’m a stranger to you.”

“You might as well be. You’ve changed.”

She swallows hard. “Too late. Much too late.” She looks at me with eyes swimming with emotions that make my chest hurt. “If I could take back the hurtful things I’ve done…” She drops her gaze. “But the past cannot be changed. I’ll have to live with that, with losing my son because of misplaced convictions.”

My throat thickens with emotion. “Charod…I think he’s all right. He’s moved on to…wherever we go when we pass, and he’s all right.”

Her gaze flies up to meet mine. “How can you know?”

How can I explain what happened in Fertilis? How when I’d given up and lain down to die, Charod appeared to me and urged me to continue for the both of us?

My hand goes to my chest, and a gentle warmth blooms there. He’s with me. A part of me forever. The twin soul to mine. Charod… “I just know.”

My mother’s eyes glitter with unshed tears, and she sniffs and blinks rapidly to control her emotions. “Good. That’s…Thank you.”

In that moment, I can almost believe that maybe one day we can build a bridge that might take us back to being mother and daughter once more.

Artimus enters the room, trailed by two Minorax guards, who remain by the main entrance. This means that a portal is about to appear.

“Are you ready?” Artimus asks.

“I’ve been ready for the past hour.”

“I’m sorry. We had some unexpected guests arrive.”

“Who?” Erinea asks.

“Hallini of House Mairva. She says she wishes to have some time with Satan, insists that Nyx was agreeable at the ball and that Merihem was there when she conversed with Nyx.”

“Since when does House Mairva care to liaise with anyone?” Erinea has her suspicious face on.
